Sébastien Sasseville is one of the toughest and most accomplished endurance athletes on the planet. He has reached the summit of mount Everest and by doing so, he became the first Canadian with type 1 diabetes to have reached the highest peak on earth.  Sebastien completed the legendary Sahara Race, which appears on the Times Magazine top 10 list of the toughest endurance events in the world.

Sébastien also ran across Canada; a 7500 kilometer journey equivalent to 180 marathons in nine months. More recently, he  added his name to the very select club of the Race Across America (RAAM) finishers . RAAM is known as the toughest race on earth, with 20 times less finishers in history than people who have reached the top of Everest.

Sébastien Sasseville is a best selling author and a frequent contributor in newspaper, articles and magazines. His first book, One Step at a Time, was published in 2016.

His second book, Esprit d’équipe, published in 2022 and co written with Gabriel Renaud has already sold thousands of copies. The book is a gripping account of their journey at the Race Across America. It is primarily focused on the power of the team and it offers practical insights on how to build cohesive, highly-engaged and to-performing teams.

Sébastien is also the author of numerous blogs, a contributor to more than 10 books, and his opinion pieces have appeared in La Presse.

Sébastien, totally inspiring

Sébastien Sasseville was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2002, the most severe form of the disease. He then vowed that the condition would never stop him. He has dedicated his life to inspiring and impacting others positively. When Sebastien isn’t speaking corporately, he still makes frequent appearances in schools and diabetes camps.

Today, no other person living with type 1 diabetes in the world has accomplished what he has. His achievements in sports are an undeniable proof that adversity can transformed into opportunity. Sébastien’s story isn’t about overcoming obstacles, but rather the opposite. Sébastien has purposely chosen to lean into the toughest challenges on earth, to learn, to grow, and to help others to believe they can also achieve the impossible.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. It can occur at any age, but usually manifests itself in children and young adults, making them dependent on insulin for the rest of their lives. Unlike type 2 diabetes, it cannot be prevented by diet, exercise or medication.

Climbing Mount Everest

On May 25, 2008, Sébastien Sasseville became the first Canadian with type 1 diabetes to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

Sahara Race

October 2012, Sébastien competed in the Sahara Race in Egypt: a 250-kilometer ultramarathon, completed in five days and in autonomy, in the world’s largest desert.

Race Across America

The Race Across America is the world’s toughest ultra-cycling race. This endurance event is twice the distance of the Tour de France and is completed in half the time.

Running across Canada

On February 2, 2014, in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Sébastien Sasseville began a cross-Canada run: a 7,500 kilometers journey  equivalent to 180 marathons in nine months. The adventure ended in Vancouver, on November 14, on World Diabetes Day.
